The internet is often the first place our patients turn to for information about anything from aardvarks to zoology. However, if you are relying on the world wide web for information about your eyes (or any other health related issue), a word of caution is in order.
Running a quick search on the word “EYES” with a popular search engine produced 1,330,000,000 results, many of which contain inaccurate, misleading, and potentially dangerous information which is often presented as “advice”.
Examples of some myths: “Reading in dim light is damaging to your eyes”. This is false. Actually, this may only serve to make you sleepy. “Sitting too close to the television harms your eyes”. Again, this is not true. In fact, a child sitting too close to the television may be doing so because he or she may be near-sighted and cannot see that far away. Bring them in for a thorough eye-health examination.
Be certain that your source of information on the internet is a reliable one and, if you come across something questionable, be sure to discuss it with us as your second opinion.
